A good agent is local, communicates clearly, and can show you how they would handle your specific situation. A license alone does not tell you that. Here is what to check before you hire anyone.
1. Local Experience
Ask how many homes they have helped buy or sell in your area, and in your price range. A Utah County market can move differently from Salt Lake or Park City, even within the same month.
2. Their Plan for Your Home
For sellers, ask for a pricing recommendation with comparable sales, and a marketing plan in writing. For buyers, ask how they will help you compete when a good home hits the market.
3. How They Communicate
Ask how often you will hear from them, and by what method. Pay attention to how fast they respond to you before you hire them. That is usually how it will go during your transaction.
4. Who You Will Actually Work With
Some agents work with a team. Ask who handles showings, paperwork, and questions, so there are no surprises.
5. Reviews and Referrals
Ask for past clients you can speak with. A good agent will gladly share them.
6. How They Are Paid
Compensation is negotiable and should be explained to you in writing before you sign anything.
7. Your Comfort Level
You may spend months working together through one of the largest financial decisions you will make. You should feel heard and informed.
What This Means for You
Interview at least two agents. Compare their answers, not just their promises. If you would like to talk through your plans with me, I serve buyers and sellers across Utah, Salt Lake, Wasatch, and Summit Counties and I am happy to answer questions with no pressure.
